Welcome to Laporte

LaPorte, Colorado, is a small, unincorporated community located in northern Larimer County, just northwest of Fort Collins. It has a rich history tied to the development of the American West, particularly during the mid-19th century, and serves as a gateway to the scenic foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Historical Overview:
LaPorte was originally founded as a trading post in 1858 during the Colorado Gold Rush. The town was first known as "Colona" and became a key stop for traders, trappers, and gold prospectors heading westward. Its strategic location along the Cache la Poudre River made it an essential hub for transportation and communication in the region.

In 1862, the town's name was changed to LaPorte, which means "The Door" in French, reflecting its role as the gateway to the mountains. At the time, LaPorte was considered for the capital of Colorado Territory due to its growing significance. LaPorte also played an important role as a stop on the Overland Trail, a major stagecoach route during the mid-1800s. It served as a point where travelers could rest and replenish supplies before continuing westward.

Points of Interest:

Bellvue-Watson Fish Hatchery: Located nearby, this historic fish hatchery has been in operation since 1910 and plays a key role in maintaining the state’s fish populations. It’s a great place to learn about local wildlife and conservation efforts.
