Welcome to Fort Collins

This Northern Colorado hub has, in recent years, become a sought after nexus of activity, culture, live music, and industry. FoCo is about 60 miles north of Denver, and serves as the county seat of Larimer County. Home to Colorado State University (CSU), New Belgium Brewery (of Fat Tire beer fame), Otter Box, and several other companies and cultural institutions.

Fort Collins was established in 1864 as a fort named after Col. William O. Collins, the commander of the 11th Ohio Cavalry, to protect travelers on the Overland Trail. The fort was decommissioned in 1867, yet the area continued to grow as a trading post and agricultural center, in part due to its location near the Cache la Poudre River (locals call it 'The Poudre.') Colorado State University was founded in 1870 as the state agricultural university, and a boom in farming and ranching was also going on. The city was formally incorporated in 1873. CSU, known for agriculture, engineering, construction, and one of the best veterinary systems in the nation - has helped Fort Collins become a center of innovation in the region.

Just a few of the many hallmarks of this vibrant city:
Trails, Parks, and Outdoor Enjoyment - There are about 40 miles of paved trails in Fort Collins, many running along quaint creeks and rivers and networked through the residential neighborhoods and subdivisions. Founding leaders planned for the city to follow a grid design, and then directed that each square mile of the grid should have some sort of park in which to enjoy the seasonable climate. This is a tradition that has persisted as the area has developed. There is no shortage of recreation to be had here, which makes it a great home for anyone who appreciates fresh air and outdoor amenities!

Old Town
is the charming historical district and cultural heart of Fort Collins. Many of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and it actually inspired the architects who designed and built Disneyland’s Main Street. There are monthly art walks, foodie walks, and seasonal live music from the stage in Old Town Square. Visitors also enjoy boutique shopping, some great bars and restaurants, and many craft breweries. And Ice Cream!

Just west of the city lies Horsetooth Reservoir – a popular spot for boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking. The water for the surrounding communities is also sourced from this reservoir and others, as well as from nearby rivers. The area is striking and scenic and well loved by all sorts of visitors for its vistas and views. Named for the distinctive Horsetooth Rock formation that towers above it, you know you're a true local when you've watched the sun set between those bicuspids!

Cache la Poudre River: The Poudre River, Colorado's only designated National Wild and Scenic River, runs through Fort Collins. It offers outdoor recreation opportunities such as rafting, kayaking, fly fishing and hiking, and is lined with parks and trails for walking and biking (and, farther west, camping). Highway 14 threads the river corridor and delivers travelers from Larimer County across Cameron Pass – and then to Jackson and Routt counties and Steamboat Springs.
